Electro-mechanical cables testing
Modern electro-mechanical cables combine optical fibres with power and signal conductors. The strength element is either steel wire or synthetic fibre, often aramid. These cables are subject to continuous fatigue; tension-tension, tension-torsion and bend cycling over sheaves. Often failure is not of the strength member but in the components themselves. Good testing requires continuous monitoring of the fibre optic transmission and conductor continuity. TTI personnel have extensive experience in elm design and testing. In sample preparation we will terminate the cable, splice optical the optical fibres to measure optical power loss, and loop the conductors to monitor electrical continuity and changes in resistance.
